When Your Teeth Shift After Braces
You spent months or even years in braces, and your smile looked great when they came off. Then, somewhere along the way, a tooth started to turn, or a gap began to open. If that sounds familiar, Invisalign clear aligners may be just the solution for you.
At Invisalign Brickell, part of the Centre for Invisible Orthodontics, Dr. Stephen Grussmark and our team regularly see adults from Coral Gables, Key Biscayne, and Gladeview whose teeth have moved since their teen braces. So can Invisalign fix it? In many cases, yes. Call us at 786-563-4973 to book a complimentary virtual consultation with Dr. Grussmark, or keep reading to learn how it works.

A Plan Built Around You
Every smile is different, so your treatment plan is customized to your teeth, your bite, and your goals. If another approach would serve you better, we’ll tell you.
Shifting After Braces Is More Common Than You Might Think
Straightened teeth aren’t permanently locked in place. Your teeth sit in bone and are held by ligaments, and both need time to adapt after braces come off. That’s why orthodontic teams recommend retainers, and why some movement can still happen years later. This is called orthodontic relapse. Some degree of tooth movement after orthodontic treatment is common, which is why long-term retainer use is an important part of maintaining your results.
Why Teeth Move After Braces
There’s rarely a single cause. The most common ones include:
- Retainer changes. Retainers get lost, wear out, or fall out of a routine, especially once life gets busy after high school.
- Natural changes with age. Teeth continue to shift gradually over time.
- Lost teeth. When a tooth is removed or lost, neighboring teeth can drift into the space.
- Teeth grinding (bruxism). Grinding puts extra pressure on teeth and can contribute to movement.
Knowing the cause helps us plan the right fix, and it helps you keep the results once you have them.
So, Can Invisalign Fix Shifted Teeth?
For many adults, yes. Invisalign can address crooked or crowded teeth, gaps, and bite concerns like overbites, underbites, and crossbites, which are the kinds of changes that often show up after braces. Whether it’s the right choice for you depends on how far your teeth have moved and on your overall oral health, which we can assess at your consultation. Our Invisalign candidacy guide is a good place to start.
A few things worth knowing:
- Your orthodontist may recommend retreatment with Invisalign or another orthodontic approach. Retainers are designed to keep teeth where they are, not to move them. For very minor shifting, consistent wear as directed may be all that’s needed. For more, retreatment with aligners is the usual next step.
- Retreatment is often shorter than the first round. Our relapse guide notes that retreatment usually takes less time than the original treatment. Your own timeline depends on how much movement is needed.
- Sometimes small adjustments are enough. In some cases, minor changes like dental bonding or reshaping an individual tooth can address the issue.
What Retreatment Looks Like at Our Brickell Office
At your first visit to our office at 848 Brickell Ave., we use an iTero scanner to create a digital 3D model of your teeth, with no messy impressions. From that model, we plan your treatment and preview your expected results before you begin.
From there, treatment is straightforward:
- Wear time: Aligners are worn 20 to 22 hours a day. Our Invisalign use and care guide covers cleaning, storage, and daily routines.
- Checkups: We recommend a visit about every six weeks, and possibly more often depending on your case, so we can confirm your teeth are tracking the plan.
- Timeline: The practice notes that many Invisalign treatments take about six to 12 months, although your retreatment may be shorter or longer depending on how much your teeth have shifted.

Why Many Adults Choose Invisalign the Second Time Around
Many adults who wore metal braces as teens prefer clear aligners for round two. They’re virtually invisible, and they’re removable, so you can eat, brush, and floss the way you normally do. That can matter a lot if you’re managing a busy career, client meetings, or social plans in Brickell and Downtown Miami.
If you’re comparing your options, our guide to Invisalign vs. braces explains how each approach works. The right choice depends on your teeth, and Dr. Grussmark will talk you through it honestly.
Keeping Your Smile in Place This Time
Retainers are the most important step after any orthodontic treatment. Dr. Grussmark will give you specific instructions on the type of retainer you’ll wear and how long and how often to wear it, and following them closely is the best protection against shifting again. Keep your retainer clean, too, just as you would your aligners.
It’s also worth knowing when a retainer needs attention. If yours feels uncomfortable, no longer fits properly, or shows cracks or discoloration, contact our office instead of trying to make it work. An early check can prevent a small shift from becoming a bigger one. You can read more in our guide to retainers.
What About the Cost?
The cost of Invisalign depends on how much movement is needed, so we go over your plan and options at your consultation. We offer payment plans, and you can review general information on insurance and financing on our Invisalign cost and financing page.
