If you are interested in straightening your smile, you more than likely have a lot of questions about orthodontic treatment. Here, we provide some of the most important questions to ask your orthodontist before you begin treatment. We are more than happy to schedule a consultation for you with Dr. Stephen Grussmark at our Brickell office so you can ask any questions you may have.
What is your background and training?
Start by asking your orthodontist about their background. This is one of the most important questions to ask since it will tell you if they have training in the type of orthodontics you are interested in and if they are up to date on the latest treatments. Be sure to ask:
- Where and when did you complete dental school?
- Where and when did you complete your orthodontic specialty residence?
- How long have you been practicing orthodontics?
- What types of continuing education have you completed?
What treatments do you offer and what do you recommend for me?
Ask about the types of orthodontic treatment options your orthodontist offers and which ones they suggest for your condition. At the Center for Invisible Orthodontics, Dr. Grussmark prefers to use Invisalign® whenever possible due to its convenience, easy use, and shorter treatment time. However, he is also highly experienced in the placement and treatment of traditional braces if necessary.
Will I need additional treatments?
In many cases, underbites, overbites, and overcrowding are the result of other dental conditions that may require treatment before orthodontics. It’s important that your orthodontist addresses any underlying conditions before proceeding with your treatment.
Can you tell me about similar cases you have treated?
Although every smile is different, many people are affected by similar bite and alignment issues. During your consultation, be sure to ask your orthodontist if they have treated any cases that are similar to yours and the treatment that was used.
How long will my orthodontic treatment take?
The length of your orthodontic treatment will depend on many factors, including the type of malocclusion you have, any underlying issues that need to be addressed, and how well you follow the suggested regimen. Treatment with Invisalign® typically takes much less time than traditional braces.
What will follow-up care consists of after my orthodontic treatment?
Follow-up care can be just as important as the orthodontic treatment itself. Typically after orthodontics, you will be required to wear a retainer to help maintain the new alignment of your teeth. Consulting your orthodontist about the recommended follow-up strategy, including what to do if you break or lose your retainer, will help you prepare you for an unfortunate accident.
